This collection contains a book of sketches Mary created (mostly of landscapes with some portraits) and several newspaper articles about her painting of the Crucifixion that was displayed in Mechanic Hall in Salem, MA.

Biographical Sketch

Mary Derby was born in Salem, Massachusetts on June 17, 1814, the daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Buffum) Derby. Her father was a ship chandler. She was known as a portrait painter. She died, unmarried, in Salem on January 19, 1900.
