Biographical Sketches

Robert Knox was born on November 4, 1770 in Boston, Massachusetts, to Thomas and Elizabeth (Barrett) Knox. He was a captain in the United States Navy. He married Ann Richardson, and they appear to have had the following children: Samuel, Robert Jr., Benjamin, Charles, Elizabeth, Harriet, and Joseph—this may not be a complete list. Robert died on February 23, 1857.

Cornelius J. Van Alstine was born in 1814 in Sharon, New York. He married Helen Augusta Bainbridge (Knox); Robert Knox (1770-1857) was his brother in law. Cornelius was a lieutenant on the sloop Dale until he was detached on January 17, 1856. He was then court-martialed, but the sentence was annulled due to a court error in 1859. In 1866 there was an application for his admittance to McLean Asylum; it is not known if he was admitted. Cornelius died on August 12, 1866, in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
