Scope and Content Note

The Winter H. Everest maritime research collection is a collection of notes on ships, ports, and people in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This information was compiled by Winter H. Everest. It is not known why this research was being done. This research does not appear to have resulted in a finished product, such as an article or book. As the topics and categories of the research are not easily understandable, the materials, for the most part, have been left in the original order in which they came to the library. The majority of the material is handwritten, although there is the occasional photostat. None of the material is dated. This collection has been divided into three series.

Series I. Newspaper Notes and Abstracts contains handwritten notes from newspapers; some of the notes consist of entire articles, others are abstracts. In most cases, the source of the notes is made clear.

Series II. Correspondence and Notes contains correspondence about Everest's research and notes made (presumably) by Everest. This series has been divided into four subseries. Subseries A. Correspondence contains correspondence to Everest in reference to research inquiries he appears to have made from multiple sources. Subseries B. Miscellaneous Notes contains the bulk of the collection. Many of the original boxes were labeled "Miscellaneous Notes", with no further identifying information. In an effort to make these items more accessible, general subjects have been included in the folder descriptions, when possible; however, the materials have been left in their original order—the exception being that oversized materials were moved to more appropriate sized housing. Subseries C. Miscellaneous Notes on Shipping contains notes that were originally labeled as "Miscellaneous Notes on Shipping." Subseries D. List of American Consuls contains a list of individuals who served as American Consuls from 1787 to 1872. These notes appear to be in alphabetical order by location, and were left in the order in which they arrived.

Series III. Indexes contains eight indexes that arrived with the collection. All of the indexes were housed in metal three ring binders, and were removed from the binders for preservation purposes. Two indexes were labeled as "Indexes to the Everest Collection". Six of the indexes cover topics such as shipbuilding centers, ship masters, and ships.
