Scope and Content Note

The Robert Knox Jr. Papers contain the shipping, business, and personal papers of Robert Knox Jr. The bulk of the papers date from 1831 to 1848; the collection has been arranged into three series.

Series I. ShipsÂ’ Papers include customs and port documentation for ships that Knox mastered or on which he served as captain. The series also contains letters to and from ship crew members regarding voyages and business matters, memo books, and shipsÂ’ documents.

Series II. Accounts and Receipts contains accounts and receipts for named and unnamed vessels, miscellaneous accounts and receipts, account books, and a bank book for Robert Knox.

Series III. Personal Papers and Correspondence contains a work document for Knox, a letter for a gold rush prospector, a letter of introduction for Knox, a list of maps and charts, legal notes for two court cases, and research into family genealogical records.

Biographical Sketch

Robert Knox Jr. was born in 1802. He lived in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and served as a master, captain, and co-owner of several vessels during the mid-1800s.
