Scope and Content Note
The Salem Mechanic Light Infantry Records include constitution documents and lists of members. The collection includes two handwritten copies of the constitution for the Salem Mechanic Light Infantry. The first copy was written in 1807, the second in 1869. The constitution from 1807 also includes a list of member signatures that span from 1807 until 1890, bound together in one volume.

Historical Sketch
The Salem Mechanic Light Infantry was formed on February 26, 1807 and paraded for the first time on July 4, 1807 under Captain Perley Putnam. The company often participated in town celebrations and paraded with other organizations in the area including the Salem Light Infantry and the Danvers Light Infantry. During the Civil War, the company served in the 5th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia before being transferred to the 6th Regiment and then to the 7th Regiment, Company B.
