Scope and Content Note

The Reliance Hose Company No. 1 Records document the activities and financial records of this Salem, Massachusetts, fire-fighting organization. The two record books document reports of meetings alarms and fires, and regulations of the company. Pasted in Volume 1 are newspaper reports of parades. The Membership book lists names of members. The membership certificate was issued to John C. Remon Jr. on April 10, 1876. The account book is a record of expenses and receipts. The two Treasurer's books list names of members and statements of their accounts.

Historical Sketch

The Reliance Hose Company No. 1, a reorganization of the Reliance Engine Company No. 1, was formed at a meeting held in Salem, Massachusetts, on April 1, 1869. Officers included Foreman, 2nd Foreman, Clerk, Steward, and a standing committee of three members. The company operated out of the Engine House on Derby Street. Reorganization of the company took place on July 1, 1883. Revised regulations of the company were adopted on May 1, 1885. In addition to fighting fires, the company participated in parades and held various social events such as dinners, dances, and parties.

In October 1888, all property of the company was disposed of and the company disbanded at a meeting that adjourned with the signing of "Auld Lang Syne."

Provenance

Two record books, account book, and the 1869-1885 Treasurer's book were donated by E. W. Dalton on August 24, 1891. The 1867-1869 Treasurer's book was a gift from Charles W. Getchell on December 2, 1943. The membership list and membership certificate were donated by Dean Edwards on October 11, 1988 (acc #88016).
