Scope and Content Note

The Nathaniel Kinsman Papers consists of financial and legal papers belonging to Kinsman, his sons, his in-laws, and others. The collection has been divided into three series.

Series I. Nathaniel Kinsman Papers contains Kinsman's receipts, accounts, and legal papers. For some of the legal documents it is not possible to determine if Nathaniel Sr. or Jr. is the Nathaniel referenced in the documents. This series also contains material related to Kinsman's sons, Nathaniel and Simeon.

Series II. Robinson Family Papers contains papers of the Robinson family, particularly Captain Andrew Robinson, Nathaniel Kinsman's father-in-law.

Series III. Other contains the estate papers of William Parsons, and legal and estate papers of other individuals.

Biographical Sketch

Nathaniel Kinsman was born in 1714, to Joseph and Susanna Kinsman. He was a deacon in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He married Anna Robinson (1723-), the daughter of Captain Andrew and Rebeckah (Ingalsal) Robinson in 1741. They had eight children together: Anna (1743-); Nathaniel Jr.(1745-); Daniel (1748-); Mary (1751); Simeon (1752-1818); William (1754-); Benjamin (1757-); [Hannah] (1763); and John (1766-). Nathaniel married Dorcas Parsons in 1787, and died in 1797.

Nathaniel Kinsman Jr. was born to Nathaniel and Anna Robinson in 1745. He married Abigail Eveleth in 1770.

Captain Andrew Robinson, son of Abraham Robinson, was married Rebeckah Ingalsal. They had eight children together: Rebeckah (1705-); Mary (1708); Mary (1709-); Judeth (1711); Andrew (1713-1714); Dorcas (1717-); Hannah (1720); and Anna (1723) (Ancestry).

Provenance

This material was found in the collection. An invoice book for the ship Minerva, dated 1807, was moved to MSS 43. Robinson Family Papers, Fam. Mss. 839, was integrated into this collection. Fam. Mss. 839 was donated to the Essex Institute by Arthur K. Hunt, on April 25, 1918. Hunt was a distant relative of the Kinsman and Robinson families featured in this collection.
