Ebenezer B. Crocker Papers, 1824-1841, undated

 Collection
Identifier: MH 66

Scope and Content Note

The Ebenezer B. Crocker papers are made up of shipping papers from Crocker's time as a supercargo; they contain material from vessels that Crocker worked on and account books that belonged to Crocker. This collection is divided into two series.

Series I. Ships' Papers contains the papers from individual ships and includes bills, invoices, letters of instruction from the ship owners, memoranda, correspondence, and customs duties. It is unclear how the letter of instructions for the ship North America came to be in this collection, as Crocker was neither the owner nor the supercargo of the ship.

Series II. Account books contains fourteen account books focused on individual ships, and on more general accounts. The number assigned to the account books in 1923 has been included in the content list. This series has been divided into two subseries. Subseries A. Ships' Account Books contains account books specific to individual ships. The account book for the ship Massasoit, which contains receipts for cargo brought on board in 1841, has Henry H. Crocker's name on it, but was used by Ebenezer B. Crocker. Subseries B. General Account Books contains account books not specific to one ship.

Biographical Sketch

Ebenezer Bacon Crocker was born on November 1, 1811 to David and Rachel (Bacon) Crocker in Barnstable, Massachusetts. He moved to New York City and became the first president of the C. C. Association of New York (Freeman 646). He also became a senior partner in the shipping merchant firm Crocker and Warren, with George Warren. Crocker and Warren was a successful business, trading all around the world. Crocker had real estate holdings worth $15,000 in 1850, and in 1860 had combined real estate and personal holdings worth $75,000 (Knoblock 168).

Before entering into a profitable partnership with George Warren, he worked as a supercargo on board many vessels owned by Daniel C. Bacon. He also appears to have worked for the Boston firm of Crocker and Sturgis, which was headed by Henry H. Crocker, his brother, and James Sturgis.

He married Alicia D. Cobb. Crocker died on March 3, 1871.
