Scope and Content Note

The Daniel Walden papers consist of 10 volumes of logbooks and letter books of this Lynn, Massachusetts, sea captain. The volume in Box 1, folder 1 also contains part of a cyphering book, a mathematical teaching tool. The volumes are arranged in chronological order. The account book contains accounts for the Tuskar (Brig), Brothers (Brig) and Roebuck (Ship).

Biographical Sketch

Daniel Walden was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on August 30, 1814, to Daniel and Mary Ann Walden. He became a ship captain and sailed around the world for many years. In 1840 he married Harriet H. Smith and they had one son, George Elbridge (born 1844). After retiring from the sea, he became a clerk and superintendent of the Lynn (Mass.) Water Works. He died in Lynn, Massachusetts, on February 7, 1889.
