Scope and Content Note

The records in this collection include correspondence, typed manuscripts, pamphlets, postcards, photographs, legal papers, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the Hawthorne and Manning families of Salem, Massachusetts. There is a small amount of documents pertaining to the immediate family of Nathaniel Hawthorne; the rest is concerned with his descendents and Manning ancestors. This collection has been divided into six series.

Series I. Hawthorne Familycontains correspondence, legal papers, bills, and miscellaneous items from and about members of the Hawthorne family.

Series II. Manning Hawthorne contains correspondence with Rebecca B. Manning and Richard Clarke Manning Jr. The series also contains some photographs.

Series III. Manning Family contains correspondence of various Manning family members, photographs, financial papers, legal papers, and some miscellaneous items.

Series IV. Richard Clarke Manning Jr. contains correspondence, financial papers, legal papers, news clippings, and journals. This series also contains miscellaneous items, such as materials relating to the sale of Hawthorne material in the 1930s.

Series V. Burnham Family contains correspondence and legal papers from members of the Burnham family. It also contains genealogical notes and papers regarding Harvard College.

Series VI. Miscellaneous Families contains material related to the Dodge, Pierce, Putnam, and Tuttle families. It also contains a diary by an unknown woman, and a journal kept onboard the schooner Orion.

Biographical Sketch

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Captain Nathaniel Hathorne (1775-1808) and Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne (1780-1849). He attended Bowdoin College, graduating in 1825. Hawthorne married Sophia Amelia Peabody (1809-1871) in 1842 and together they had three children: Una (1846-1877), Julian (1846-1934) and Rose (1851-1926). He wrote several short stories, which were collected in Twice-Told Tales (1837) as well as his more famous novels The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of the Seven Gables (1851).

Richard Clarke Manning, Jr. (1867-1957) was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Richard Clarke Manning and Sarah Elizabeth (Yeaton) Gould. Clarke Manning, Jr. graduated from Harvard and went on to study at the Universities of Bonn and Leipzig before returning to Harvard to obtain his PhD. He taught Latin at Hobart College until 1903 and then at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio from 1903 to 1937. Clarke Manning, Jr. married Gertrude Devol in 1912; the couple did not have children.

Manning Hawthorne (1906-1985), the son of John Francis Bennoch Hawthorne and Edna, was the great-grandson of Nathaniel Hawthorne. He wrote several articles on his great-grandfather as well as other family members. Manning Hawthorne married Alice Katherine Smith and they had two daughters, Deborah Manning (b. 1938) and Elizabeth Manning (b. 1942).

This bulk of this collection was donated by Manning Hawthorne on September 11, 1975.Two letters from Julian Hawthorne (1886, 1907 in box 1, folder 4) were purchased from David J. Holmes Autographs, on October 16, 2002 (Acc 2002.075). Three letters from Julian Hawthorne (1885, 1902, 1910 in box 1, folder 4) were purchased from David J. Holmes Autographs on May 13, 2003 (Acc 2003.021).
