Scope and Content Note
The John E. Goodhue papers contains letters written by Goodhue to his family while enlisted in the 4th Battery, Massachusetts Volunteer Light Artillery. The letters describe camp life at Ship Island, Mississippi, Fort Jackson, Camp Parapet, Fort Pike, Louisiana, Dauphin Island, Alabma, and Galveston, Texas. The collection also contains a booklet created by the Soldiers and Sailors Historical and Benevolent Society which gives a personal and military history of Goodhue. The collection includes a few letters from his family and some newspaper obituaries.

Biographical Sketch
John Edwin Goodhue was born on October 20, 1839 in Salem, Massachusetts, to Benjamin Goodhue (1804-1853) and Mary Secomb Goodhue (1810-1841). He was a shoemaker and tanner. He married Adaline E. Nutter (1847-1889) in Gloucester. They had two children, Carrie E. (born 1871) and Hattie F. (born 1880). He enlisted in the Fourth Massachusetts battery of light artillery in 1861. He received a final honorable discharge at New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 13, 1865. For many years he was a watchman at the Naumkeag mills.
