Scope and Content Note

This collection includes correspondence, accounts current, bills, receipts, deeds, and invoices related to the business endeavors of Foster Waterman and his ship-building business in Medford, Massachusetts. The collection has been arranged into two series.

Series I. Ships' Papers contains records documenting the vessels involved in Foster Waterman's ship building endeavors. The folders are individually designated by vessel name and arranged alphabetically. Records for these vessels typically include accounts current, bills of sale, invoices, rates of freight, and correspondence.

Series II. Financial Records documents the financial history of Foster Waterman's various business endeavors. The records include accounts current, bills, deeds, and correspondence with businesses involved in the shipping industry.

Biographical Sketch

Foster Waterman was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts on June 2, 1805 to Jotham Waterman (1774-1836) and Olive Phinney (d.1842). Waterman began his career as a ship carpenter, completing his apprenticeship with Captain Noah Brooks, of South Boston. In Medford, Massachusetts, he became a skillful ship builder, engaging in business as a member of the firm of Waterman & Ewell. He married Charlotte Vose Cushing (1809-1891) on April 13, 1830 in South Scituate, Massachusetts (now Norwell, Massachusetts) and the couple had five children: Charlotte Cushing Waterman (1833-1854); Louisa Maria Waterman (1836-1919); Lyman Foster Waterman (1839-1843); Lyman Foster Waterman (1846-1850); and Edwin F. Waterman (1851-1851). Waterman retired from ship building and engaged in business related to commerce, navigation, and real estate in Boston, Massachusetts. He became director of the Home for Aged Men and the Home for Orphans, contributing liberally to both charitable organizations. Waterman died on July 22, 1870, while at his summer home in Nantasket Beach, Massachusetts.
