Elizabeth Porter Gould Papers, 1766, 1903-1906

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 343

Scope and Content Note

The Elizabeth Porter Gould Papers consist primarily of a scrapbook containing correspondence and reviews related to Elizabeth Porter Gould's books and other writings. Several other letters and clippings relate to a memorial stone for Ezekiel Cheever erected in the Old Granary Burial Ground, Boston, in 1905. Gould's correspondents included notable literary and political figures of her time.

Folder 1 consists of a scrapbook compiled between 1903 and 1906, containing letters and gift acknowledgments received, publisher leaflets, and clippings of the published reviews of her books, pamphlets, and poems. The letters, many of which bear Gould's comments, include acknowledgments from politicians, librarians, historians, and other important figures of the period for her books John Adams and Daniel Webster as Schoolmasters (1903), An Offering in Behalf of the Deaf (1903), and Ezekiel Cheever, Schoolmaster (1904).

The scrapbook also contains letters, published accounts, and a poem by Gould relating to the erection and dedication of the memorial stone in 1905 for her ancestor Ezekiel Cheever (1614/15-1708). Folder 2 contains additional clippings and letters, many from Elisha D. Eldridge (1828-1913), concerning plans for the Ezekiel Cheever memorial stone.

Also included (Folder 3) is a 1766 guardianship paper to Francis Choate of Ipswich, Massachusetts, for Sarah Cheever.
