Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of business and personal receipts for Jonathan Kettel and receipts and accounts for Captain William Noyes. It has been divided into two series.
Series I. Jonathan Kettel Papers contains receipts which document his purchases of food, materials for cabinet making, shoe repair, and rent of a shop. The series also includes Kettel's assignment as Clerk of the Sixth Regiment, 2nd Brigade of the Massachusetts Militia (1802), some documents from the time he was tax collector for the Third Religious Society of Newburyport (1803-1804), documents from his time as tax collector for the town of Newburyport (1804-1808), and papers from his time as gauger (customs official) in Newburyport (1811-1825). One receipt documents his payment to Capt. Hutchins toward the schooner Ranger (1800). There is only one letter in the collection; it was written to Miss L. H. Kettell from John Merrill regarding Probate Court (1849). In 1831 Jonathan Kettel became the executor of William Noyes' estate along with John B. Titcomb.
Series II. Capt. William Noyes Papers contains personal and business receipts and accounts. There are documents referring to the sloop Cate, schooner William, brig Amazon, and brig Alex & Sally. There is an insurance document (1806) which lists the schooner Hazard, the brig Ranger, and other vessels and another (1812) listing the ships Harriot, Aurora, and Fortune, and brigs Washington, Merrimack, and Nancy. It also contains an account for the estate of Capt. Isaac Noyes (1796).

Biographical Sketches
Jonathan Kettel (also spelled Kettle) was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1759 to James and Sarah Kettell. He became a cabinetmaker in Newburyport. He served in the military as a fifer and was made clerk of the Sixth Regiment, 2nd Brigade of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in 1802. He served as tax collector for the town of Newburyport. He bought a share in the schooner Ranger. He died in Newburyport on May 6, 1848.
Capt. William Noyes was born in 1739. He joined the Marine Society of Newburyport on January 7, 1773. Capt. Noyes sailed in the brig Betsey, brig Lively, and schooners William, Sally, and Amazon. He was captured during the war by a British cruiser and he and his crew were confined in Dartmouth prison, England. He died on November 7, 1831 at age 92.

This material was purchased on September 21, 2001 (acc # 2002.035). In 2002 (acc # 2002.035) two receipts (Box 1, Folder 3) and a copy of Power of Attorney from Capt. William Noyes to Jonathan Kettel (Box 2, Folder 5) was purchased and added to the collection.
