Scope and Content Note
This collection includes the papers of Andrew Heath and his son William, as well as documents of other Heath family members and a collection of miscellaneous papers. Each series is arranged chronologically.
Series I. Andrew Heath Papers are primarily financial and include correspondence, accounts, receipts, and fire insurance policies.
Series II. William Heath Papers contain correspondence, accounts, and legal papers. They include a notice declaring William the administrator of James Lowell's estate in 1843, documents transferring to William the rights to various patents, and a bill of lading for the schooner Flying Cloud (1856).
Series III. Heath Family Papers contain a promissory note made out to Richard Heath, fire insurance documents belonging to Mary A. Heath, and an undated letter from Charlestown, Massachusetts, referencing an unidentified Mr. Heath.
Series IV. Miscellaneous Papers consist of miscellaneous accounts, poems, and memoranda. They include shipping papers of the ships Girard (1835) and Bowditch (1857) and a deed from Jacob Knowlton of Bath to Annis Hildreth.

Biographical Sketch
Andrew Heath (circa 1778-1872) lived in Bath, Maine, and had several children with his first wife, Joan Tibbetts (1787-1850), including John Andrew, William, and Isaac T. Heath. He married Lydia Sylvester in 1850. Andrew was a Freemason and member of the Solar Lodge.
John Andrew Heath (1811-1890) married Sarah Augusta Putnam in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1847. Sarah Augusta was the daughter of Susanna Silver and Jacob Putnam, who pioneered Salem's leather industry. John and Sarah lived in Boston and had three children: Jacob (b. 1848), John A., and Nathaniel Heath.
William Heath (1814-1896) was a bedstead manufacturer and inventor in Bath, Maine. He married Elizabeth S. Jameson in 1840; the couple had one child in 1842. Elizabeth died the year their child was born. In 1843 William married Mary Ann Lowell (1813-1900), sister of sea captains James Currier and John Currier Lowell. Also in 1843 he became the administrator of the estate of James Lowell.

The bulk of the Andrew and William Heath Papers comes from an unknown source. Two bank books come from the Phillips Family Papers. A stock assessment and two shipping records were found in the business records of the Churchill, Brown & Manson Company and have been added to William Heath's papers.
