Historical Sketch

The Spanish American War was a four-month conflict between Spain and the United States, beginning on April 25, 1898 and lasting until August 12, 1898. The war was fought in Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and in the Philippine Islands and Guam in the Pacific. American volunteers were raised from state militias to help outfit the United States Army and Navy. In 1898, the Treaty of Paris allowed temporary American control of Cuba and, following the purchase from Spain, indefinite colonial authority over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
