Scope and Content Note

The Salem Marine Insurance Company Records include a volume of directors' meeting minutes, a volume of stockholder meeting minutes, and 35 volumes of marine policies. Except for two missing volumes the marine policies form a straight run from the company's beginning in 1856 to six years before its dissolution. It also contains a ledger showing dividends paid to the stockholders (1858-1883). The collection also contains material relating to French and Danish spoliation claims.

Additional material on the Salem Marine Insurance Company may be found in six volumes of William Northey's (b. 1829) secretary correspondence copybooks in MSS 78 Box 8.

Historical Sketch

The Salem Marine Insurance Company, not to be confused with the Salem Marine Insurance Company (1800-ca. 1840) which may be found in MSS 139, operated from 1856 through 1897. According to the 1857 Salem Directory, the company was headquartered at 163 Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts, and had capital of $100,000. Its president was Jeremiah Page, and notable directors at the time included Edward D. Kimball, B.H. Silsbee, William Hunt, James B. Curwen, and William Northey (Secretary).

The bulk of the collection is from an unknown source. The volume of dividends to the stockholders was purchased on August 8, 2019 (acc #2019.016). The material relating to French and Danish spoliation claims was transferred from EC 50.
