Historical Sketch

The American Civil War, the War between the States or simply the Civil War was a war fought between 1861 and 1865. In December of 1860, after the election of Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency, South Carolina elected to withdraw from the United States of America. This was shortly followed by the secession of six other states, with four more to follow to create the Confederate States of America. The war lasted four years. General Robert E. Lee agreed to the terms of surrender at the Appomattox Court House in April of 1865. The remaining Confederate Troops were defeated or surrendered by the end of May 1865. Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia on May 10, 1865. The Civil War left over 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure.
