Mary Drebit Papers, 1940-1944, undated

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 300

Scope and Content Note

The Mary Drebit Papers consist of World War II-era correspondence from three United States Soldiers to Mary Drebit, an Essex County resident. The collection contains some drafts of letters from Mary Drebit to the soldiers as well.

The letters document the day-to-day activities of enlisted soldiers during World War II and describe the locations where the soldiers were stationed. However, because the Army censored correspondence, the letters include very little detail about the military itself. The letters also portray life on the home front and contain references to popular music, dances, and books of the period. Of interest is their description of a single woman with her own business during the 1940s.
