Biographical / Historical

David Ashby, son of Jonathan Ashby (1717-1782) and Elizabeth West (1718-1783), was baptized in Salem, Massachusetts, on April 17, 1757. He was a shipwright, like his father, and worked on many ships in Salem. He was appointed sexton of the South Meeting House in 1820 and was a sergeant in Captain Cushing’s company. He married Mary Field (died 1789) in 1781. They had a son, David Ashby (baptized in 1783) who was a caulker and graver, and a daughter, Polly (died 1795). He died on January 15, 1822.
