Scope and Contents

The John T. Woodbury papers contain materials from Woodbury’s business dealings in the shoe mill industry and his own farm, as well as personal material. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Business Papers contains materials from John T. Woodbury’s business dealings in the shoe mill industry of Lowell, Massachusetts, and includes materials such as account books, bank notes, business cards and tags, receipts, and papers regarding his stock investments. This series also includes real estate and poll taxes from various towns in Massachusetts.

Series II. Personal Papers contains materials from John T. Woodbury’s personal life and some materials from his relatives: Lucy Dodge; Laura Woodbury; John L. Woodbury; and Augustus Woodbury. This series contains ciphering books, one of which is a geometry workbook, commonplace books, correspondence, a genealogy of John T. Woodbury’s immediate family, a phrenology character report of John T. Woodbury, recipes, and various miscellaneous notes written by John T. Woodbury. The wedding invitation between Mary Elizabeth Donica to Augustus Lawrence Bashe for July 8, 1914, was found in the commonplace book (1840-1887) between pages 138 and 139, and is now located in the folder labeled miscellaneous (box 3, folder 4).

Biographical / Historical

John T. Woodbury was born on May 31, 1812, to John and Elizabeth Woodbury. He was involved in the Lowell, Massachusetts shoe mills working at Cheap Boot and Shoe Store located at No. 2 John Street, Lowell in 1843 (as found on his business card located in box 2, folder 4), and later the Ladies’ One Price Shoe and Fancy Goods Store located on No. 76 Merrimack, nearly opposite Central Street, Lowell. He also operated a farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts, where he lived. He died on July 11, 1899 of old age (Massachusetts, Death Records, 1841-1915).

Laura S. Woodbury was born in October 13, 1851, to Nehemiah and Esther (Patch) Woodbury (Ancestry.com). Nehemiah Woodbury was the older brother of John T. Woodbury (1812-1899), born on March 26, 1803. She was a school teacher (Ancestry.com and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

John L. Woodbury was born in 1843, to Nehemiah Woodbury and Esther nee Patch. (Census Place: Hamilton, Essex, Massachusetts). He served in the Massachusetts 50th Regiment during the Civil War as a private (U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865).

Augustus Woodbury, cousin to J.T. Woodbury, was born in 1825, and died in 1905 (Massachusetts, Death Records, 1841-1915).

Lucy (Dodge) Woodbury was born in approximately 1807, and was the older sister to J. T. Woodbury (1812-1899). She lived with John T. Woodbury and listed the occupation of keeping house during the 1870 census (Census Place: Hamilton, Essex, Massachusetts).
