Scope and Contents
The Charles F. Williams Papers contains personal papers and business correspondence related to his appointment as Surveyor of the Customs. This collection has been divided into two series.
Series I. Personal Papers contains an account book of ships’ cargo, which contained loose materials, which were removed and placed in folders. The materials removed from the account book include: papers related to ships’ cargo, notes related to genealogies, an 1878 pamphlet titled, Waite family of Malden by Deloraine P. Corey, and a sheet or blotter paper from Hub Steam Printing Company. This series also includes genealogies of early Salem settlers George Williams and Nicholas Hayward.
Series II. Business Correspondence contains four letters from the United States Treasury Department, Office of Commissioner of Customs regarding his appointment as Surveyor of the Customs for the district of Salem and Beverly, MA.

Biographical / Historical
Charles Frederic Williams was born on September 23, 1807, in Salem, MA to parents, Lydia (Wait) (1775-1857) and Israel Williams (c. 1772-1831) (Vital Records). In 1836, Charles married Sophia Walker Silver (1814-1879), daughter of Captain James Silver and the couple remained in Salem where they produced three sons, George Washington, Charles Frederic, and James Silver (MSS 895). Charles worked as master and log keeper for several Salem-based ships including the Siam and the Delphi (Log 637). Charles served as the Surveyor of Customs for Salem and Beverly, MA from 1863, until his death in 1865 (Wikipedia).

Four letters were donated by Wallace A. Chisholm on May 11, 1926. The account book was donated by William E. Northey in 1941. This collection was formerly cataloged as Fam. Mss. 1096.
