Scope and Contents

The town of Middleton, Massachusetts records is an artificial collection of town records, and items from town residents. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Town Records contains originals and copies of town records. For the purposes of this finding aid, town records refer to records created by or directed to representatives of the town regarding town business. These include general records, tax lists, announcements, expenses, correspondence, and school regulations. This series also includes a folder of militia orders.

Series II. Other contains items from Middleton residents such as deeds, receipts, indentures, and genealogy notes. This series also contains excerpts copied from church and town records.

Biographical / Historical

Middleton, Massachusetts is a town in northeastern Massachusetts. Originally home to a number of Indigenous settlements, Middleton became an European colonial settlement in 1659 (Wikipedia), and was incorporated in 1728 (Town of Middleton). Part of Essex County, Middleton was a farming community, mostly due to its location on the Ipswich River. During the 18th century Middleton also contained a vital ironworks industry, later becoming a vacation town (Wikipedia).

Provenance

Handwritten excerpts from Middleton, Mass., church and town records made by Lura W. Watkins were donated by Ruth Tyler on April 12, 1976. The following items were donated by William C. Waters on May 27, 1952: Samuel Symonds' 1793 will; Samuel Symonds deed dated 1750; Samuel Symonds' 1753 will. The rest of the material was found in the collection.
