Scope and Contents

The Charles F. Johnson collection contains two albums of postcards,and 110 glass lantern slides. The postcards are addressed to both Charles, his father Frederick, and other family members. The lantern slides are of people and places presumably in China, and of cartoons. The collection also contains some loose post cards, Charles' birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and a program from his memorial service.

This collection is open for research use. The lantern slides are restricted due to fragility. Lantern slide 0063 (box 2) and some of the postcards are restricted due to cultural sensitivity.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Federick Johnson was born on April 19, 1894 in Kulangsu, or the Gulangyu, Gulang Island, China ("Gulangyu"). His parents were Frederick Richard and Fannie (Green) Johnson; Frederick was a missionary in China when Charles was born. Charles married Clare B. Stromsmoe on July 1, 1916, in Spokane, Washington. At that time, he listed his profession as a carpenter (Ancestry). Charles died on March 10, 1936 in Los Angeles, California.
