Scope and Contents

The records of the City of Beverly, Massachusetts is an artificial collection of masonic lodge records, church records, and official records from the city of Beverly. This collection has been divided into three series.

Series I. Masonic Lodge Records contains notes and articles about freemasonry and lodges in Beverly. The majority of the material in this series was collected or created by Eugene J. V. Huiginn. This series also includes some photographs of lodge members.

Series II. Church Records contains records from various churches in Beverly. Some of these records are copies.

Series III. Other Records contains some official records created by the city of Beverly, and some miscellaneous material related to the city and its inhabitants.

Biographical / Historical

The city of Beverly, Massachusetts is part of Essex County, which is north of Boston, Massachusetts. The area was colonized by Europeans in 1626, and was incorporated in 1668. Prior to European colonization, Beverly was home to the Naumkeag (Wikipedia). Beverly is now on the territory of the Pawtucket (Native Land).

Some consider Beverly to be the birthplace of the United States Navy, as the first ship commissioned by the Army, the schooner Hannah sailed from Beverly on September 5, 1775. Beverly was also the site of America's first cotton mill in 1787; was home to United Shoe Machinery Corporation; Parker Brothers; and a Nike missle site (Wikipedia).

This collection is an integration of Beverly, Massachusetts Town and Church Records (EC 3), Account book of Beverly, Mass. (MSS 0.391), and Property appraisal of Beverly, Mass. (MSS 0.392). Both MSS 0.391 and MSS 0.392 were removed from the Essex County Collection. The rest of the material was found in the collection.
