Biographical / Historical

Thomas E. Oliver was born June 12, 1779, in New Hampshire (Find a Grave). Oliver was a merchant who lived in New Castle,New Hampshire and had a shipping business out of Portsmouth (Ancestry).

Oliver married Mary Batson Oliver (1777-1868); they appear to have had one child, George H. Oliver (1828-1834) . At the time of his death on June 16, 1868 (Find a Grave), Oliver owned shares in four vessels (Ancestry).

This collection is an integration of three collections. MSS 0.842, a letter and account of the schooner Miriam was found in the collection. MSS 0.1226+, a deed of sale for the boat Marygold, was donated by Francis L. Higginson on June 14, 1989 (Acc 25,043). The rest of the collection was purchased from Ten Pound Island Book Co., with the Augustus Story Bequest, on October 14, 2021 (Acc 2021.037).
