Biographical / Historical

Ellen Wayles Randolph (1796-1876), a granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), lived at Monticello for much of her childhood and early adult life. In 1825 she married Joseph Coolidge Jr. (1798-1879) of Boston whom she first met when he visited Jefferson at Monticello. Upon their marriage, they lived in Boston. Joseph Coolidge was involved in trade with Asia as a partner with Russell and Company and Augustine Heard and Company. Ellen accompanied Joseph on extended journeys to London and Macao; her travel diary documenting her nine-month trip to London has been published. Ellen and Joseph had six children; the youngest, Thomas Jefferson Coolidge (1831-1920).

Thomas Jefferson Coolidge married Mehitable (Hetty) Sullivan Appleton (1831-1901) in 1852. A very successful businessman with interests in textile mills, railroads, and banking, he also served in a variety of government posts and was U.S. Minister to France in 1892-1893. Coolidge, his wife, and their three daughters and one son (Thomas Jefferson Coolidge Jr.) maintained their primary residence in Boston but, in 1871, he purchased the 116 acres that comprise what is now known as Coolidge Point in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. In 1873, he built a summer residence there known as “Mansion House.” Other buildings were built on Coolidge Point during his lifetime, including country houses for family members and friends, as well as greenhouses.

Thomas Jefferson Coolidge Jr. (1863-1912) married Clara Amory (1872-1957). They had four sons and maintained their primary residence in Boston. In addition to numerous other business interests, Thomas Jefferson Coolidge Jr. founded the Old Colony Trust Company with his father and served as its first president. His cousin by marriage Charles McKim of McKim, Mead and White designed a country house for him and his family. Built at the turn of the 20th century, it was known locally as the “Marble Palace” but was referred to as the “McKim House” by the family. Mansion House was moved to another location on Coolidge Point to accommodate the McKim House and was later torn down.

Thomas Jefferson Coolidge III (1893-1959) followed the path of his father and grandfather into banking and was chairman of the Old Colony Trust Company. He was also Chairman of the United Fruit Company and Undersecretary of the Treasury during Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first term. He married Catherine Hill Kuhn (1902-1984) in 1927. They had four children: a boy who died in infancy, Catherine Coolidge Lastavica, Thomas Jefferson Coolidge IV, and John Linzee Coolidge. Thomas Jefferson Coolidge III built a home in Brookline with William T. Aldrich as architect, which was the primary residence until 1958 when they razed the McKim House (aka Thomas Jefferson Coolidge Jr. House, Marble Palace) and built a more contemporary house in its place with H. Page Cross as architect. This house too was later razed.

Dr. Catherine “Kitty” Coolidge Lastavica was educated at Radcliffe and John Hopkins School of Medicine. She was a member of Harvard’s Department of Tropical Public Health and a faculty member at Tufts University School of Medicine. Brick House at Coolidge Point was built as her primary residence in 1968. As the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson, Dr. Lastavica has worked to preserve his legacy and the contributions of her family. Dr. Lastavica was married to John Winthrop Sears from 1965 to 1970 and to John Lastavica from 1978 until his death in 2011.
