Scope and Contents

The Collection of Currency is an artifical collection of various forms of paper and coin-based currency from both the United States and abroad. Researchers interested in using the collection should refer to the Inventory below, under the External Documents tab, for an itemized list of materials, with detailed descriptions. This collection has been divided into two series. Researchers should consult the item level inventory to determine which box(es) and folder(s) they would like to request.

Series I. Paper Notes includes multiple types of currency on paper. Included in this series are: promises to pay; treasury notes; bearer bonds; counterfeit notes; bank notes; checks; fractional and postage currency, and coupons. Also included are some engravings and miscellaneous items.

Series II. Coins includes multiple types of currency in coin form. Included in this series are: currency; tokens; and commemorative coins.

This collection is open for research use. The 5 shilling note from 1690 is restricted, a digital surrogate is available.
