Biographical / Historical

The Salem Young Women’s Association was founded on April 15, 1909, with the goal of promoting educational, social, and holistic wellbeing of young women in the Salem, Massachusetts area through various classes, recreational activities, and social events. Members had to be between 18 and 45, unmarried, and not earn more than $5000 annually. The association was led by a Council who oversaw the affairs of nine sub-organizations. In 1911, the association purchased property on 18 Brown Street in Salem, which became a center for club socialization and rented rooms to club members and visitors.

From 1909 to late 1980, the association offered classes such as French, dressmaking, cooking, and Red Cross work to their members, as well as holding widely attended luncheons and other fundraisers. After an ongoing budget deficit in the late 1970s, as well as several accidents and security concerns at the home, the board of directors began to discuss possible dissolution of the association and distribution of its assets to charity in 1981, which was finalized in 1982 (MSS 994, Box 6, folders 7, 10).
