Content Description
The Quest for Beauty Club Records contains the financial and administrative records of the organization, which document the members’ outings around Massachusetts focused on fine art appreciation, educational pursuits, social events, and volunteer work. The collection has been divided into two series. As the majority of the collection had no original order, folders have been arranged chronologically within each series.
Series I. Financial Records contains the organization’s checkbooks, receipts, account books, bank statements, and financial reports. The majority of these records were grouped by fiscal year. Some folders contain various types of financial records and have not been altered so as to reflect the organization of the creator. Items containing what appear to be social security numbers have been removed from the original folder and restricted. Papers previously in binders have been placed into folders.
Series II. Administrative Records contains the club’s meeting minutes taken by the recording secretary (most of which are accompanied by corresponding postcards and newspaper clippings attached by the creator), meeting reports specific to the club’s anniversary events, event menus, and handmade event program booklets. Within the meeting minutes, the creator has interspersed a small number of lists of organization by-laws, officer lists, member lists, calendars of events, and short original poems, which have not been removed as to maintain the organizational system of the creator. Items in binders have been placed into folders.

Biographical / Historical
The Quest for Beauty Club was founded in 1931 in Salem, Massachusetts, as a group for women with the goal of seeking and appreciating various forms of beauty in the world through cultural and educational programs. Club activities were organized by a Program Committee that planned events, a Nominating Committee that elected officers, and a Flower Committee that sent flowers to members who fell ill.
Club members discussed poetry and books, attended lectures, learned about other countries through multicultural events, attended concerts, held holiday parties, and went on day trips to historical sites, gardens, and museums. The members also collaborated with New England Homes for the Deaf, knitted clothing for soldiers during World War II, and donated portions of their dues to charity. Though the group was Salem-based, members frequently traveled around Massachusetts for events, often visiting Boxford, Marblehead, Concord, and Boston. The organization decided to disband in 1996, and disbursed their assets to various charities (MSS 996 Box 2, folder 2; Box 4, folders 4-5; Box 5, folder 8)
