Scope and Contents
The Salem Society for the Higher Education of Women Records contains the administrative and financial records of the Society, documenting the organization’s efforts to further the education of young women in the Salem community through scholarships. The collection has been divided into two series. As the majority of the collection had no original order, folders have been arranged chronologically within each series.
Series I. Administrative Records contains thank-you notes and personal letters from scholarship recipients, annual report booklets (containing by-laws, officer lists, member lists, secretary’s reports, committee reports, and financial statements), meeting minutes, newspaper clippings documenting elections and the patronage of society presidents, and the group’s charter. The folder titles and document grouping of the creator have been maintained in this series. The meeting minutes are interspersed with newspaper clippings, letters, and typed reports, and have not been removed to respect the organization of the creator.
Series II. Financial Records contains account books, checkbooks, bank passbooks, deposit slips, and bank statements with a small number of canceled checks. The bank statements had no original order and were arranged chronologically within folders.

Biographical / Historical
The Salem Society for the Higher Education of Women was founded in 1897, with the goal of assisting young women finance their post-secondary education. The society offered grants and loans to female graduates of Salem High School, or graduates of other local schools who had been recommended to the Society.
The Society included an executive committee, a beneficiary committee which included a Salem High School teacher, and regular voting members. The beneficiary committee decided which applicants to award financial aid to based on their previous academic performance and demonstrated efforts to finance their own education. The Society distributed hundreds of dollars per year, funding women’s education at schools such as Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Wellesley College, and Simmons College. In 1941, the group voted to reorganize such that a board of trustees was solely responsible for the distribution of funds. It is unclear when the Society ceased operating.
