Biographical / Historical

Marilyn Riseman (1927-2014) was a party planner, boutique clothing store owner, and socialite from Roxbury, Massachusetts, known for her kabuki-style makeup (Muther, 2014).

Riseman was the youngest child of Boston bookmaker “Doc” Sagansky. She opened an avant-garde clothing store called Apogee on Newbury Street in 1966 with her husband, architect William Riseman, and eventually opened five more branches as the store grew in popularity. She became a fashion icon in Boston, known for her international avant-garde style as well as support of local designers. She had one daughter, Marcy Prager, before her husband passed away in 1982 (Fee, 2014).

Riseman worked as an event planner for the Lafayette Hotel, often planning elaborate, themed fundraisers for charities such as the American Cancer Society. She also planned events at the Ritz-Carlton and Colonnade hotels, such as weddings and Bar Mitzvahs (MSS 1864 Box 5, Vol. 3,4). Riseman passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2014 (Muther, 2014).
