Scope and Contents

The Iron Manufacturing Companies Records contains records related to the business interests of David Pingree (1795-1863) and Asa Pingree (1807-1869) in four iron manufacturing companies located in the New England: The Maine Iron Company; The Ipswich Manufacturing Company; New Hampshire Iron Company; and Briggs Iron Company. The collection is chiefly comprised of correspondence, accounts, and other records received by David Pingree from the corporations. One folder contains correspondence from the Briggs Iron Company received by Asa Pingree.

Biographical / Historical

The Maine Iron Company, Ipswich Manufacturing Company, New Hampshire Iron Company, and Briggs Iron Company were corporations active in New England in the mid-19th century. Each company was involved in the mining of iron ore or the manufacture of materials from raw iron ore. David Pingree (1795-1863) held business interest in each of the corporations, particularly in the Briggs Iron Company, which was founded by David Pingree’s younger brother, Thomas Perkins Pingree (1803-1864).
