Historical Sketch
The Salem Artillery Company was organized on October 16, 1786 in Salem, Massachusetts. A commanding officer and standing committee, comprised of three members elected annually, transacted all company business and concerns. Members were expected to be ready to appear for military exercise when notified. The company participated in parades in Salem and appeared alongside the Salem Light Infantry and Mechanic Light Infantry during town processions, celebrations, and to help escort visiting political or military figureheads. During the War of 1812, the company camped in the Salem Common in 1814 in response to the approach of a British war ship off the coast.
