Biographical / Historical

The Essex Railroad Company was as independent railroad which operated a line that ran between Salem, Massachusetts and North Andover, Massachusetts during the mid-19th century. The corporation was chartered in 1846 and began to operate in January 1847. It leased its railway to Eastern Railroad Company in 1851, following an extended closure of service due to a lack of funds (Southern New England, 253). David Pingree served as the president of the company before his death in 1865 (David Pingree Obituary).
