Scope and Contents

Rowley, Massachusetts Town Records contains records created by local government, Rowley churches and religious organizations, and local residents. Records are primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries and relate to taxation, local business, and Rowley churches. The collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Town Records contains business and government records not related to Rowley churches. Materials include: property tax books and ledger sheets; notices; receipts; a proprietor’s book for a local pasture; a color print of the Platts-Bradstreet House; and two letters from a Union solider sent to Rowley from Union-occupied Baton Rouge in 1864.

Series I. Church Records contains church records. Materials include: records of the Baptist Society of Rowley and Sabbath School; parish tax receipts; and the records of two Ecclesiastic councils held in Rowley in 1810 and 1817. The former council brought together church leaders from across eastern Massachusetts to judged a contentious church dispute over a local reverend.

Biographical / Historical

Rowley, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts which was originally incorporated in 1639 (About Rowley). The town is located on the traditional lands of the Pawtucket and Agawam peoples (Native Land Digital).

The town’s economy was primarily agriculture-based throughout the first two centuries of its incorporation, producing hemp, flax cloth, and cotton. In the mid-19th century, the manufacturing of carriages, shoes, and boats all took prominent roles in the economy of the town. (About Rowley).
