Biographical / Historical

The Holly Tree Inn of Salem was a restaurant located at 9 Central Street which was active from 1875-1877. The Inn was founded by Susan L. Kimball, John C. Osgood, Frederick Porter, and Martha G. Wheatland. In 1877, the founders dissolved the restaurant, after it experienced a downturn in buisness.

The restaurant was one of many Holly Tree Inns, the first of which was established by Annie Adams Fields in Boston. The inns provided inexpensive food and coffee, chiefly for a working class patronage. (Gollin, 164-165)
