Biographical / Historical

Edward Graves was born in 1831 in Salisbury, Massachusetts, the son of William (1785-1851) and Susannah Pike (1791-1878) Graves. In 1858, he married Elizabeth Wheeler (1834-1864) and they had one daughter, Mary Wheeler (1860-1865).

He was a ship captain. The Tennyson was built in 1865 by the John Currier shipyard, for managing owner William Graves, Jr. On her maiden voyage, Tennyson sailed to Liverpool, under the captaincy of William Graves' younger brother, Alexander. Once there, Alexander transferred command to their youngest brother, Edward. For the next eight years, Edward sailed the Tennyson regularly between Boston and India. On the night of February 22-23, 1873, the Tennyson was caught in a storm off Mauritius; she was blown over and overwhelmed by the sea and Edward, along with most of the crew, went down with the ship.
