The Henry Edwards Papers contains the business and personal papers of Henry Edwards, a Salem, Massachusetts-born ship’s captain. Materials include: an 1857 cargo manifest for the George W. Jones (Brig); an 1857 letter from Edwards to his wife; a notarized record of Edward’s status as a seaman issued in Salem and other Salem documents; correspondence related to Edward’s work for the merchant John Bertram of Salem as captain of the John Bertram (Brig), including letters between Bertram and Edwards and Edwards and George Ropes, an agent for Bertram in Mozambique; and an account related to Henry Edward’s estate as administered by Benjamin Edwards.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Edwards was a seaman and ship’s captain active in the Africa trade during the 1850s. Edwards was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1825 to Joseph and Sally Edwards (Ancestry Vital Records). He married Anastasia Cotterell in 1851 (Ancestry Marriage Records). During the 1850s, he acted as a captain for the Salem merchant, John Bertram, serving as master of the John Bertram (Brig). He died prior to October 1859, at which point Benjamin Edwards was administering his estate.
