Scope and Contents

The Wallace L. Henshaw papers consist of business records and receipts, personal papers, diaries, bills, political correspondence, milk routes, and other miscellaneous papers relating to Wallace L. Henshaw, the Henshaw family and W.L. Henshaw Dairy. There is no original order to these manuscripts. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Personal Papers includes diaries, a last will and testament, personal receipts, documents pertaining to Starr King Masonic Lodge, correspondence, and hospital bills. This series has been divided into two subseries. Subseries A. Wallace L. Henshaw includes Henshaw’s United States Certificate of Naturalization, and personal diaries where he tracks the weather in Massachusetts and the Boston Red Sox game scores from the 1960s and 1970s. Other items of interest include an invitation and program for a meeting of the Starr King Masonic Lodge, a request-only women’s health textbook by Lydia Pinkham, an advertisement for the 1946 Book of Knowledge and a Newburyport-Amesbury (Massachusetts) phone directory from the year 1948. This subseries also includes floral cards from the funeral of Wallace L. Henshaw. Subseries B. Henshaw Family Papers includes last wills and testaments from Wallace L. Henshaw and his sister, Delia Huff. It also includes receipts from various home repair purchases, made by both Wallace L. Henshaw and his son, Wallace N. Henshaw, and a job application from Wallace N. Henshaw. An item of interest is a record of correspondence with George J. Bates, a Massachusetts member of the House of Representatives during Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidency between 1933 and 1941. This subseries is organized alphabetically.

Series II. Business Records of W.L. Henshaw Dairy includes samples of logos and uniforms for W.L. Henshaw Dairy, checkbook registers, milk route records and an advertising photo for J.B. Henshaw and Son, Inc. Additionally, this series includes a glass mercury thermometer with the W.L. Henshaw Dairy business name on it. This series has been divided into two subseries. Subseries A. Expense Records and Logo Samples includes physical objects with sample logos for W.L. Henshaw Dairy, such as milk bottle caps and uniform tags. It also includes two checkbook registers. Subseries B. Milk Routes includes written records of milk orders and deliveries from W.L. Henshaw Dairy.

Biographical / Historical

Wallace Lenly Henshaw was born on June 18, 1885, in Bear River, Nova Scotia to John E. and Jemima Henshaw (Chute). He moved to Salem, Massachusetts in the early 1900s, and married Helen May Newcomb (1886-1967), daughter of George E. Newcomb and Susan H. Arrington, on October 11, 1911 (Ancestry.com Marriage Records, 1840-1915). They had five children: Wallace N. Henshaw (1916-2000); George E. Henshaw (1919-2003); Lenly M. Henshaw (1923-2008); Robert A. Henshaw (1926-1955); and Helen C. Henshaw (1928-1998) (Ancestry.com 1930 United States Federal Census). During his life, Henshaw ran the W.L. Henshaw Dairy company where he employed his son, Wallace N. They sold and delivered milk to the neighborhood and kept logs of their delivery routes and customers. Helen worked as the bookkeeper. Henshaw was also a member of the Freemasons, and was the Master of the Starr King Masonic Lodge in Salem, Massachusetts in 1952 and 1953 (Ancestry.com Mason Membership Cards, 1733-1990). He died on April 11, 1974, in Beverly, Massachusetts (Ancestry.com U.S. Find a Grave Index).

Wallace Newcomb Henshaw was born on October 31, 1916, in Salem, Massachusetts and died on January 20, 2000, in Nashua, New Hampshire (Ancestry.com U.S. Find a Grave Index). In 1937, he married Thelma Irene Lindsay (1914-2005) and they had two children, Helen S. and Linda M (Ancestry.com Massachusetts, U.S., Marriage Index, 1901-1955). He worked for W.L. Henshaw Dairy, and as a salesman for Economics Laboratory Inc. He was also a member of the Starr King Masonic Lodge in Salem, Massachusetts.

Wallace L. and Helen M. Henshaw were buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Salem, Massachusetts, along with Wallace N. and Thelma I. Henshaw, and Helen C. Marcheterre (Henshaw) (Ancestry.com U.S. Find a Grave Index).

Collection donated by Wallace N. Henshaw November 1997 (Acc 1997.076) and April 12, 1991 (Acc 91007). The lithograph with mercury thermometer in it was donated by Wallace Henshaw on March 31, 1992 (Acc 91075). Print items were moved to the library’s print collection.
