Scope and Contents

The Clinton Macy papers contain the papers of the Reverend Clinton Macy relating to his tenure as rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal church from 1951 through 1985. Included in the collection are weekly church bulletins, sermon notes, planners, and various pieces of ephemera collected by Macy. The collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Sermons and Church Bulletins contains the Sunday church bulletins of St. Peter’s Episocal Church and Macy’s typed and handwritten sermons. Sermons and bulletins dated from 1951 through 1979 are organized in the order of the Episcopalian Calendar. Sermons dating from 1979 through 1985 are collected together. Six books of collected Sunday bulletins are collected at the end of the series.

Series II. Planners, Clippings, and Circulars contains Macy’s monthly planners, newspaper clippings related to Macy’s sermons, religious circulars, and church histories.

Biographical / Historical

Clinton Macy was an Episcopalian minister and the rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Salem, Massachusetts from 1951 to 1985. Macy was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts to Huram Macy and Maud Thomas in 1917 (Find a Grave). He married Dorothy Taylor, having two children with her: Patrica Macy and Thomas Macy (Find a Grave).

Macy became the rector of St. Peter’s in 1951, serving for thirty-three years. He retired in 1985, becoming Rector Emeritus of the Church and still occasionally preaching until at least 1991. Macy died in 1994 in Nantucket (Ancestry Death Index).
