Scope and Contents

The Charles William Merrill papers contains correspondence to and from his family during his time as a soldier in the American Civil War. The collection also contains letters written to his father, William Merrill, regarding the wounding and subsequent death of his son. Additionally, the Bible that Merrill was wearing at the time of his wounding, with the bullet, and a replacement Bible signed by President Lincoln are included. Miscellaneous items included in the collection are a photograph of Merrill; transcriptions of some of the letters completed by David Little, as well as articles written by Little.

Some of Elizabeth T. Merrill's correspondence was burned when her bureau caught fire, and is missing pieces of it. A roll of recruits is included in the correspondence in box 1, folder 1.

Biographical / Historical

Charles William Merrill was born on November 20, 1837, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to William and Elizabeth Merrill. Merrill fought for the Union in the American Civil War, during the battle of Fredericksburg, he was fatally wounded in 1863. One bullet hit Merrill in the chest, but did not penetrate him due to being stopped by a Bible he had in his pocket. President Lincoln heard about this, and sent Merrill a replacement Bible. Merrill died from his injuries on May 12, 1863, and was buried in West Newbury, Massachusetts (Little).

The transcripts were donated by Peter Little, on October 11, 1995 (Acc 95043). Correspondence from Benjamin Perley Poore, two bibles, a photograph, and provenance correspondence was donated by Lydia C. Poor, on January 30, 1942.
