Scope and Contents

The David Choate papers contains legal papers and notes from the administration of various estates, and commonplace books created during his time as an educator. This material has been divided into two series.

Series I. Estate Papers contains notes, legal documents, and survey books from David's work on various estates. It is organized chronologically.

Series II. Other contains what appear to be commonplace books; some are of specific topics, others are a mix of literature, history, and religion.

Biographical / Historical

David Choate was born November 29, 1796, to David and Miriam Foster Choate of Ipswich, Massachusetts (Jameson 196-198). In 1828, he married Elizabeth Wade, the daughter of Colonel Thomas and Elizabeth Merrifield Wade. David and Elizabeth had six children: David; Helen Maria; Rufus; Hannah E.; William Cowper; and Washington (Jameson 196-197).

Choate worked as a teacher for 27 years. He was a member of the local school committee, one of the founders of the Essex County Teachers' Association, an advisor and trustee of the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, a trustee of Dummer Academy, and superintendant of the Sunday School. Additionally, he was a member of the state legislature for three years, senator, and justice of the peace (Jameson 198). David died on December 17, 1872.

Provenance

The eleven volumes of commonplace books were purchased by the Essex Institute from Carmen D. Valentino, on September 21, 1992 (Acc 92022). The rest of the material was found in the collection, and was cataloged as Fam. Mss. 159.

Separated Materials

David Choate's justice of the peace papers were returned to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court December 11, 2023.
