The Robert Wilson Turner papers is made up mostly of correspondence to Turner regarding personal, political, and consular topics. Biographical / Historical
Robert Wilson Turner was born on February 4, 1858, in Plattsburg, New York. He was appointed consul general to Cadiz, Spain, by President Benjamin Harrison, a post he held from July 1889 until September 1893. During his time as consul general, Turner translated the commercial laws of Spain for publishing by the U.S. State Department; was instrumental in Spain's ending the prohibition of the use of American meats; and awarded contracts for the building of the caravels Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria, which were exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, in 1893 and 1894. Turner died in 1937 (Connelley).
