Historical Note

The U.S.S. Vandalia was a sloop of war owned by the U.S. Navy and active from 1828-1863. After being decommissioned, the Vandalia was sent to Portsmouth, NH. William H. Gilman served as Navy Paymaster aboard the vessel in Portsmouth.
