Scope and Content Note
The Hale family papers are comprised of shipping and business papers of the Hale family and their relatives, the French family, the Little family, and Cyrus King. The bulk of the collection consists of ships' papers. This collection has been divided into three series.
Series I. Hale Family Business Papers contains materials relating to the Hales' shipping and business interests and has been divided into three subseries. Subseries A. Ships' Papers contains papers relating to individual ships. The ships' papers include: bills, insurance policies, adjustments, accounts, freight lists, correspondence and instructions, protests, reports of surveyors, accounts current, charter party agreements, disbursements, consular certificates, inventories, labor lists, sales, and building contracts. Subseries B. Correspondence contains correspondence regarding Hale family business interests. Subseries C. Other contains miscellaneous business papers such as surveys of vessels, advertising circulars, shipbuilding contracts, and accounts.
Series II. Relatives' Papers contains shipping and other business related materials from relatives of the Hales. This series has been divided into three subseries. Subseries A. French Family contains correspondence to and from members of the French family, who is related to the Hales through Ebenezer (1774-1848) Hale's wife, Lucy (Balch) French. Subseries B. Little Family contains business papers belonging to the Little family, which is related to the Hales through Thomas (1773-1836) Hale's wives, Alice and Mary. This subseries includes deeds and titles belonging to John Little, ships' papers from the firm of Little and Follansbee, and ships' papers from ventures that do not appear to be related to the firm of Little and Follansbee. Subseries C. Cyrus King contains correspondence to and from Cyrus King, who was the father of Mary Caroline (King) Hale, Benjamin (1797-1863) Hale's wife.
Series III. Other contains materials that have been included in this collection, but whose connection to the Hale family is unclear. This series has been divided into three subseries. Subseries A. Captain John Walker contains ships papers and some miscellaneous business papers. No biographical information can be located on this person. Subseries B. Ships' Insurance Papers contains the papers of various ships, the majority of the papers have to do with insurance policies or claims. There are a number of different insurance companies named on these papers, but it is possible that these are related to one of the Hales' insurance companies. Subseries C. Correspondence contains business related correspondence.

Biographical Sketches
Ebenezer Hale was born in 1774. He was a Newburyport, Massachusetts, merchant and ship master, who was also elected president of the Ocean Bank, and was a trustee of Dummer Academy. His brother, Thomas (1773-1836) was also engaged in shipping activities. He married Lucy (Balch) French, and died in 1848.
Thomas Hale was born in 1773. He was a Newbury, Massachusetts, hatter, town treasurer, and justice of the peace; he was also engaged in shipping activities. He married Alice Little (1775-1819), and upon her death, married her sister Mary Little (1786-1871). Thomas died in 1836.
Thomas Hale was born in 1800 to Thomas (1773-1836) and Alice (Little) Hale. He was a shipping merchant and ship master. He was also a store owner in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and vice president of the Merchant's Insurance Company, the Alliance Insurance Company, and the Atlantic Insurance Company of New York. Hale died in 1854.
Joshua Hale was born in 1812 to Thomas (1773-1836) and Alice (Little) Hale. He was a shipping merchant, and periodically acted as a ship master on Hale family vessels. He was also secretary of the Atlantic Insurance Company, and vice president of the Union Marine Insurance Company of New York. He married Sophia Cutler Tenney. Hale died in 1894.
Josiah Hale was born in 1803 to Thomas (1773-1836) and Alice (Little) Hale. He was a shipping merchant, as well as secretary of the Washington Insurance Company, and in 1829 established the Atlantic Insurance Company of New York. He died in 1886.
Benjamin Hale was born in 1797 to Thomas (1773-1836) and Alice (Little) Hale. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1818 and studied at the Andover Theological Seminary. He was principal of the Gardiner Lyceum (1823), professor of chemistry and mineralogy at Dartmouth College (1827-1835), and president of Geneva (later Hobart) College in Geneva, New York (1836-1858). He and his wife Mary Caroline King, the daughter of Cyrus King, had seven children. He died in 1863.
