Scope and Contents

The William H. Gove papers contains seven lawyer’s diaries and a docket book. The lawyer’s diaries date from 1890 to 1894 and 1897 and contain preprinted information about the Massachusetts legal system, including important dates and listings of members of various Massachusetts courts. They also contain handwritten client lists, diary entries, and accounts, related to Gove’s work as a lawyer, including for the Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Company. The first volume includes some entries written in Pitman shorthand. The docket book contains records of Gove’s court cases dating from 1896-1900.

Biographical / Historical

William Henry Gove was a Salem, Massachusetts Lawyer and the president of the Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Company from 1900-1920. Gove was born on September 4th, 1851 in South Berwick, Maine and died on April 14th, 1920 in Salem, Massachusetts. He married Aroline Chase Pinkham (the daughter of Lydia Pinkham) on January 5th, 1882 (Ancestry Find a Grave).
