Biographical / Historical

A ship's register was a document issued to American owned and built vessels, over 20 tons, that were employed in international trade. It included: the vessel's name; name of owner(s) and master; physical description of the vessel; and the place it was built. These documents were made in triplicate--one for onboard the ship, one for the customs house, and the third was sent to the Treasury Department (Stein 135).
