Biographical Note

Samuel Dexter Carleton was born in 1816 to father William Carleton. He was a founding partner of the firm Carleton & Norwood, later renamed Carleton Norwood & Co., which was involved primarily in shipbuilding and lime manufacturing. Near the end of his life, he and the firm were responsible for building a brick builing in Rockport. He also served as the President of the Camden Savings Bank. He was survived by three children: Eliza U. Carleton (who married William H. Luce), Adelia C. Carleton (who married Captain Henry A. Talpey), and William Dexter Carleton.
