Biographical Note

Philander J. Carleton was born December 20, 1825 to father William Carleton. In 1844, he joined the firm Carleton & Norwood, and continued as co-partner of the firm until his death. In addition to his career in the firm, he was a Democratic politician, representing Rockport in the Maine Legislature in 1869 and 1870 and in the Maine Senate in 1871. He married Sarah Babb (1826-1894), and their children were Frank P. J., Henry B., Joseph Hall, and Ralph W. Carleton. He died on May 22, 1899.
